Montreal Man Uses iPad to Enter US

A Canadian man who realized he forgot his passport as he approached the U.S. border found a new way to gain entry — his iPad.

Martin Reisch said Tuesday a slightly annoyed U.S. border officer let him cross into the United States from Quebec after he presented a scanned copy of his passport on his Apple iPad. Reisch was a half hour from the border when he decided to try to gain entry rather than turn back and make a two-hour trek back home to Montreal to fetch his passport.

He told the officer he was heading to the U.S. to drop off Christmas gifts for his friend's kids. He said that true story, the scanned passport and his driver's license helped him get through last week.

He said the officer seemed mildly annoyed when he handed him the…

Quebec Solidaire language law is bad for Montreal tech community

Québec solidaire is a democratic socialist and sovereigntist political party in Quebec, created in 2006. It was formed by the merger of the left-wing party Union des forces progressistes (UFP) and the alter-globalization political movement Option Citoyenne, led by Françoise David.

At a recent Quebec Solidare party's meeting, party members took a stance on big issues like education, health care, social justice and the French language in Quebec society.

Party members have decided among other things that when they come to power in Quebec, they would immediate make companies operating in Quebec prove to the government authorities that the knowledge of English is absolutely necessary for the position (in order to make English one of the requirements). If it is not proven but in effect, companies could…

A Canadian maker of a Wi-Fi turnkey network management solution for hotels is being bought by AT&T.

Superclick Networks Inc. of Montreal said Monday that it has agreed to be purchased by America's biggest phone company for $15 million if the Montreal company's shareholders agree. The sides hope the deal with be approved in the fourth quarter.

For co-founder Sandro Natale, the deal means the firm has come quite a long way since the day 10 years ago he and a partner thought of delivering high speed Internet to Montreal hotels.

"We never really thought that this was going to be something big," he said in a telephone interview. "It started up with a small office on St. Laurent (Street). We had some makeshift desks on a bunch of boxes. Our board room was held…

Secrets to Working with Recruiters

Recruiters can be a vital resource in your job search strategy, but you have to understand how they work (and therefore, how you need to work with them). Most frustrations that arise from working with recruiters are the result of not knowing how to get within their radar, and not fully understanding what their role is and how they can help you.

The first point to remember is that recruiters are not there to find you a job - they work for the company that hired them, not for you. Their job is to consult with a company and find the right candidate for an open position. In essence, they broker relationships between employers and talent, but they work for the company.

Your job, then, is to be on their radar when they have a position for which you're a good fit…and there are a…

What is the best way integrate social media into your projects? I'm sure at some point you've all run into something like one of the problems above, so why not share it and benefit from the experience of others.

This is a review by Shanta Nathwani of the time when she attended the second #DevTO session held at Richmond Day July 2011.

Canadian businesses ready to hire, IT rebounds first

Times are good at an IT recruiting firm when your talent is getting multiple offers.

“Software developers seem to have a lot of options these days. When they’re given an offer there’s likely another offer or two from another client on the table,” said Alex Campbell, an IT recruiter and account manager at Kovasys Inc. in downtown Toronto.

In the last few years, the firm was typically asked to find one candidate at a time to replace a departing worker. “Now people are building teams. They’re working on a brand new project, looking for positions that were never in the company before,” Campbell said.

In fact, times are so good Kovasys itself is expanding. The company has eight employees in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa and is…
